WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
In Body Mechanics 3, led by Jordan Barg (Sony, Disney), every student will master two-character interactions in 3D animation. Through animating a fight scene, you’ll learn to direct the viewer's eye, create impactful motion, and use the environment creatively to enhance storytelling. The course focuses on planning, golden poses, and selling the force of impact in dynamic scenes.

Under the guidance of industry veteran Jordan Barg (Sony, Disney), this course delves into the complexities of animating two-character interactions in 3D. Following Jordan's professional workflow, students will learn how to create visually engaging scenes that go beyond simple character movement, focusing instead on choreography, storytelling, and impactful motion. In the early sessions, students will explore how to plan and develop creative fight choreography by studying examples from iconic action sequences, such as those by Jackie Chan and Sinbad. Emphasis is placed on using the environment and adding specificity to characters' actions, ensuring every move serves the story.
Course Breakdown
Session 1:
- In this session, we will discuss planning and choreography for animations.
- We will emphasize the importance of creativity and character specificity, while providing examples .
- Our goal is to encourage interesting use of the environment and avoid simple punching scenes.
Session 2:
- We will focus on action golden poses.
- Our aim is to start blocking golden poses.
Session 3:
- We will cover the principles of 2 character scenes.
- We will discuss the magic trick of directing the viewer's eye and complimentary posing.
Session 4:
-We will discuss "Impact" and how to make animations feel impactful and weighty.
- Our focus will be on selling weight/impact from gravity or other characters.
Session 5:
- Breaking down the scene.
Session 6:
- In the final session, we will do a final pass and review student shots based on what we learned in class.
OVERVIEW
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Jordan Barg
Jordan Barg is an animator from Montreal currently working at Walt Disney Animation in Vancouver.
His career began with internships at two of the top feature film studios in the world: Sony Pictures Imageworks and Blue Sky Studios, where he learned the ins and outs of working in an animation studio while being mentored by the incredible artists who worked there.
After graduating from Seneca College in Toronto in 2019, Jordan started work on his first feature film, 2020's SCOOB! at ReelFX back in his hometown of Montreal. Following that he went to Tangent Animation to work on Netflix's Maya and the Three, and continued working with Netflix when he moved to Sony Pictures Imageworks to work on The Sea Beast and Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse. He´s currently an animator at Walt Disney Animation.
