OVERVIEW
This six-week workshop is designed for aspiring and practicing
animators who want to strengthen their drawing skills as a core component of their creative practice. We will move beyond basic life drawing to explore how to infuse sketches with energy, personality, and a clear sense of performance. Each session will blend foundational techniques with creative exploration, helping you develop a more intuitive and powerful drawing habit. The focus is less on creating polished illustrations and more on capturing the essence of movement and emotion in every line.
Course Breakdown
Week 1 – Drawing for Communication
Learn the purpose of drawing in animation: gesture, structure, and appeal. Practice finding the line of action and building poses with clarity.

Week 2 – Rhythm and Gesture
Explore dynamic poses using curves, tension, and motion. Includes quick sketches from action prompts and film studies.

Week 3 – Structure and Volume
Turn stick figures into solid forms. Practice foreshortening, grounding, and building 3D characters with weight and balance.

Week 4 – Acting and Exaggeration
Push poses for emotional impact. Learn silhouette clarity, golden poses, and acting thumbnails.

Week 5 – Hands and Faces
Focus on expressive details. Learn to simplify and stylize hands and faces to show emotion and character.

Week 6 – Final Jam & Integration
Apply everything in a creative sketch challenge. Share your work, get feedback, and receive tips for keeping up your drawing habit.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Scott Wright
Scott Wright is a 2D and 3D animator with 25+ years of feature film experience.
He attended Sheridan College in Canada where he studied Character Animation and has his master’s degree in illustration from the Academy of Art.
After graduating from college Scott was hired by DreamWorks Animation where he worked for 15 years as both a 2D and 3D animator.
Over the past 10 years Scott has been freelancing for commercials, feature films, and tv shows as either a storyboard artist, character designer, prop designer and is currently working at DisneyTV as a 2D character animator.
His film credits include; Prince of Egypt, The Road to Eldorado, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon, SCOOB and many more.
