Welcome to Previz - Sequences and Nuances! In this course, we'll explore the intricate world of filmmaking, focusing on sequence structure and shot composition. Whether you're an experienced professional or a passionate storytelling enthusiast, this program offers a hands-on experience to delve into fundamental concepts. Building upon the groundwork laid in our previous ‘Previz for 3D Animators’ workshop, we'll begin with introductions and a refresher on Previz basics. From shot types to lenses, transitions, and the essential components of a frame, we'll cover it all. Throughout the course, we'll dissect the 180 rule and its pivotal role in shaping shots and sequences. Engaging in activities and discussions, we'll delve deeper into narrative purpose, pacing, transitions, and visual storytelling techniques. Expect interactive sessions where you'll exercise your imagination, build a visual library, and sketch sequences. Through live workflow demonstrations, Q&A sessions, and sequence analysis, you'll hone your skills in blocking, staging, and shot sculpting. As we progress, we'll explore shot components, develop personal styles, and refine sequences through iterative passes. Each session will culminate in a sequence show-and-tell, providing opportunities for feedback, discussion, and further refinement. Join us on this enriching journey as we uncover the secrets of Previz - Sequences and Nuances, and together, let's craft more captivating stories!
Course Breakdown
Session 1:

Introductions and chat.

Refresher on Previz and the basics of filmmaking.

Shot types, lenses, transitions, and components of a shot/frame.

180 Rule.

We will study and chat about how the 180 rule/axis line is the backbone of both shots and sequences. Story and structure. Multiple characters and the puzzle of the axis line.

Suggested homework - Study a sequence and break down the 180 rule. Additionally, be prepared to discuss this in the next class.
Session 2:

Discussion on the 180 rule.

Overview of the structure of a sequence.

Effectivity in sequences relying on pacing, transitions, and contrast is crucial for engaging storytelling and visual impact.

Analysis as a way to understand concepts. Embracing experimentation and imagination.

Exercising imagination, building a visual library and sketching a sequence.

Suggested homework - Construct a short sequence. Boards, Animatic or 3D blocked.

OVERVIEW
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Chandra Shekar
Chandra's career was kicked off at The Third Floor Inc. His experience at this studio made him realize how much fun the Previz department is and he continued to cement his career as a Previz Artist, working with several studios like Day For Nite, Industrial Light & Magic, Tangent Animation. Shows he worked on include - Skyscraper (2018), Playmobil The Movie (20190 Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie (2023), Maya And The Three (2021), and Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) among others.
With experience from a diverse set of projects in both VFX and Animated shows combined with his interest in teaching, Chandra is excited to share his learnings with others. He aims to emulate collaborative teamwork on a project in this workshop - and become comfortable working independently or alongside a team.
Off work hours, one can find Chandra pursuing his ever expanding list of interests like Reading, Drawing, Biking, Playing the Guitar - and working on his many side projects like making Music, and creating costumes and cosplaying.
